The 6 Ways Labor Progresses
Everyone knows that childbirth doesn’t happen instantly and that it can be a long and drawn out process. What everyone doesn’t know is why it can take so long for labor to progress. Learning these progressions can explain why mom feels idleness or pain before or during labor.
Labor advances over time and the progression can be measured in 6 different ways. Making it to each of these points shows that your labor is moving forward well and that you are closer to meeting your baby.
The cervix opens (ripens).
Hormones and prostaglandins are released in the body and the cervix softens and increases in elasticity. This usually takes place before the onset of contractions.
The position of the cervix changes.
The cervix, which usually points toward the back (posterior) gradually moves to pointing toward the front (anterior). With a vaginal exam, your medical provider will be able to tell you which direction your cervix is facing.
The cervix thins and shortens (effaces).
The cervix, usually thick and long, begins to shorten and become paper thin. The cervix is usually about 3.5 cm and shortens to about 1 cm. The cervix also thins during this time so that it is easier for baby to move through birth canal.
The first three steps usually take place before labor actually starts, to prepare the body for birth.
The cervix opens (dilates).
Dilation occurs with progressing contractions. During this time, the provider gives a vaginal exam and measures the cervix in cm. Over the course of labor the cervix dilates from 0cm to 10cm.
The baby’s chin tucks onto the chest and the head rotates.
The rotation of the head makes it easier for the baby to move through the birth canal. The head also molds to fit through the birth canal as well. Sometimes the head must mold before rotation.
The baby descends.
The baby’s head molds to fit through the cervix, pelvis and eventually the vagina.
Once all of these progressions have been met, mom is ready to delivery her baby. These processes take time, but they are a healthy reminder of the joy you will experience once baby is born!
